WHAT IS GLUCOSAMINE AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Primarily healthy cartilage needs three things: water for lubrication and nourishment, proteoglycans to attract and hold water, and collagen to hold the proteoglycans in place. Proteoglycans are like a rope that runs through the collage and are essential because they hold many times their own weight in water, which lubricates and nourishes collagen. If the cartilage is damaged, the rope thread becomes weak and “slips away” and therefore the collagen loses its nourishment as the proteoglycans lose their grip and float. Thus, the cartilage cannot withstand shocks, cracks and can wear out completely.
Glucosamine is a major building block of water-loving proteoglycans. In addition to being a building block for proteoglycan synthesis, its mere presence acts as a stimulus for cells that produce proteoglycans—in fact, glucosamine is a key factor in determining the number of proteoglycans that are produced by cells.
Glucosamine has been shown to accelerate the production of proteoglycans and collagen and normalize cartilage metabolism, which helps maintain cartilage.
Thus, because of glucosamine’s effect on cartilage metabolism, it can help the body repair damaged or eroded cartilage. In other words, glucosamine strengthens the body’s natural repair mechanisms.

CHONDROITIN SULFATE
Where glucosamine helps form the proteoglycans that sit in the cartilage space, chondroitin sulfate acts as “liquid magnets.” Chondroitin is a long chain of repeating units that attract fluid into proteoglycan molecules.
This is important for two reasons:
The fluid acts as a spongy shock absorber. The fluid moistens the nutrients in the cartilage. Articular cartilage has no blood supply, so all of its nourishment and lubrication comes from the fluid that drains and flows through the application of pressure and release into the joint. Without this fluid, the cartilage would become malnourished, drier, thinner and more fragile.
HOW CHONDROITIN SULFATE WORKS
Chondroitin sulfate is a long chain molecule with a negative charge attached to it. As these chains wrap around the proteoglycans, they repel each other and thus create spaces between each proteoglycan. These are what are known as matrices within the cartilage and this is where the fluid flow is. There can be up to 10,000 of these chains on a single proteoglycan molecule – so we have a super water retainer because these chains make sure that all these molecules are kept away from each other and can’t clump together.
In addition to pulling in precious fluid, chondroitin protects cartilage and prevents it from breaking down and inhibits certain “cartilage-chewing” enzymes, interferes with the metabolism of other enzymes that will starve the cartilage of fluid, stimulates the production of proteoglycans, glucosamine and collagen.
